Specifically, the husband is to love his wife “as Christ loved the church” (Eph 5:25), meaning that a husband has to put his own desires aside and totally commit himself and sacrifice all that he is for the betterment of his wife. In this way, the husband “sanctifies” his wife, or makes her whole and complete, in a way that makes her holy and without fault. In the same token, the wife is to submit to her husband, recognizing him as the head of the marriage, as Christ is the head of the church (Eph 5:22-24). The Greek word Paul used for “submit” in this passage is “hypotassō”, which means, “voluntary attitude of giving in, cooperating, assuming responsibility, and carrying a burden”.
